Not to be forgotten
I intentionally left off two artists from the above lists. Michael Jackson was an icon in the 80s and despite his recent history, if you were a teen in the 80s, Michael Jackson was the hottest thing around. Thriller had us trying to dance like him and to moon walk in front of your friends was the ultimate dance move.
It is June 25, 2009, and I am in Manhattan on business. In my hotel, during a break, I flip on the TV for background noise while I work on some email. To my utter shock, I hear the news that Michael Jackson has passed away today. I can't believe it - it's not possible. Why is it we think stars are nearly immortal? Their passing seems so unreal, and yet, they're human, too, with all the illnesses that befall the rest of us. Still, it seems to be the end of an era - one of those historic and tragic events that is destined to stick with me through time.
RIP Michael Jackson - June 25, 2009
Your contribution to the music industry will be missed.
And we shouldn't forget Weird Al Yankovic. He first appeared around 1979 and throughout the 80s and 90s parodied the most popular songs. In my senior year of high school, a club of which I was a member was attending a scholarship award luncheon at a local hotel. The meal was stuffy and elegant and absolutely opposite the standard McDonald's fare of any group of teenagers. The waitstaff, a little perturbed at our leaving most of our meals on our plates, came out with dessert singing Weird Al's version of Michael Jackson's Beat It - a song called Eat It.
